Sometimes it may be necessary for human remains to be removed from their place of original interment. Exhumations are carried out with respect and dignity an only when the following consents have been obtained.

If the place of interment is a Church Cemetery then written consent should be obtained from both the Church and Council's Health and Built Environment Services. Council and the Police Service should also be notified of the planned date and time of exhumation.

If the place of interment is a Council Cemetery then consent should be obtained from the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland and Council's Health and Built Environment Services. Council and the Police Service should also be notified of the planned date and time of exhumation.
