Love Food Hate Waste During European Week For Waste Reduction 2015!

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is encouraging everyone to “Love Food Hate Waste” during this year’s European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), which runs from the 21st until 29th November 2015.

EWWR aims to encourage householders, businesses, schools and organisations to take positive action on reducing their waste, with the Northern Ireland theme focusing on food waste prevention.

With Northern Ireland taking part in the European wide call to action each year since the campaign began, this year everyone is encouraged to get involved by pledging to do one thing differently to reduce food waste in your home or workplace.

To get the ball rolling Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has pledged their support of the increasingly popular ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ Campaign and are keen to encourage residents to get involved.  For more information log onto www.ewwr.eu.

‘The Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign aims to help householders make the most of their food, and money, by making some simple changes to the way they manage their food. Tips include: writing a meal plan for the week before doing the weekly shop; checking the date labels on purchases to ensure that you get the longest life from your product: and even how to cook some delicious and tasty recipes using the bits and pieces from your store cupboard and fridge.

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Recycling Officer, Janice Dunlop said, “Council has taken part in European Week for Waste Reduction for a number of years, as it is a great way to raise awareness and demonstrate how we can all take personal responsibility through simple actions, to reduce our impact on the environment and reduce our waste.

“’The Love Food Hate Waste’ theme is very relevant as we can all benefit from making the most of our food due to ever increasing food prices and lower disposable income. We encourage our residents to get involved and apply some of the simple actions available, such as downloading the Love Food Hate Waste App and making one of the many recipes or signing up for the Love Food Hate Waste Newsletter available through www.lovefoodhatewaste.com, to reduce food waste in the household.

“Unfortunately there will always be an unavoidable element of waste food coming from our homes and for this, Council encourages householders who have food caddies to use them to their full potential, as the contents will go on to be recycled into top quality compost.”
