New Community Fridge set to open in Dungiven

New Community Fridge set to open in Dungiven

Fri, October 26, 2018

A new Community Fridge in Dungiven has been launched at Glenshane Care Centre.

The trial initiative is supported by environmental charity Hubbub UK in a growing effort to tackle food waste. Spearheaded by individuals within the local community the venture is also backed by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Dungiven Library and the town’s local supermarkets.

Offering her support, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Brenda Chivers said: “This is the second facility of its kind to open in the Causeway Coast and Glens and it is fantastic to see the community in Dungiven coming together in an effort to tackle the problem of food waste in such a positive and proactive way. The average household throws away £700 worth of food every year while at the same time so many people are living in food poverty. This innovative facility will enable residents and businesses to share surplus food and by working together this will greatly reduce needless waste.”

The fridge will be open initially every Thursday from November 1st between 11.30am-12.30pm.  From this date, all residents, food businesses and keen gardens with gluts in the Dungiven area are encouraged to donate surplus food which members of the public can then take home for free.

In August 2017, a Community Fridge was established in Cloughmills where the initiative has proved to be a resounding success. Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Environmental Resource Officer Team is keen to speak with groups or communities who feel they could benefit from a similar scheme.
