The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has met with the Veterans’ Commissioner for Northern Ireland at Cloonavin.

Councillor Richard Holmes and Council’s Veterans’ Champion Alderman Sharon McKillop sat down with Danny Kinahan to discuss working together to support former service personnel across the Borough.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Holmes said: “Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and is committed to assisting those who serve, both past and present, as well as their families who have also sacrificed so much.

“The Covenant is a formal acknowledgement of Council’s recognition that the wider service community is fully deserving of fairness and respect in all elements of our society. It is important that we do what we can to ensure this is always upheld.

"Council takes its pledge very seriously and it was an honour to meet the Veterans Commissioner to further demonstrate our commitment and discuss how we can work together to support the local Armed Forces community.”

Paying tribute to Council’s ongoing efforts, Mr Kinahan said: "I was really pleased to meet the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Richard Holmes, and the new Veterans Champion, Alderman Sharon McKillop.

“Since becoming Veterans Commissioner for Northern Ireland, I have met with all the local councils and their Veterans Champions to encourage them to provide as much support as possible to our veterans in their local community.

“I know that Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has always been to the fore in championing our Armed Forces and veterans' community and I look forward to continuing to work with the Council and the Veterans Champion on these issues, recognising the immense contribution that our service personnel and veterans make to their local community and indeed wider society."
