The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has offered his congratulations to the next Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.

Reverend Dr Sam Mawhinney, the minister of Adelaide Road Presbyterian Church in Dublin, was elected Moderator-Designate of the all-island denomination at the Church’s annual election on February 7th.

Commenting on the announcement, Councillor Ivor Wallace said: “Reverend Mawhinney has close links to Causeway Coast and Glens, having grown up in Ballycastle, where he went to school and attended Ballycastle Presbyterian Church.

“This is where his calling first became apparent, making these connections to the town an important part of his journey to this principal position within the Church.

“I want to offer him my warmest congratulations as he prepares to take this next important step in his ministry.

“It would be remiss of me not to mention Reverend Richard Murray from Drumreagh Presbyterian Church in Bendooragh who was also considered for election, in what was a very close vote between the Church’s 19 regional presbyteries.

“I would like to offer him my good wishes as well, as he continues to serve his congregation here in the Borough.”
