Join Flowerfield’s community stitchers this June for its exciting free textile project Woven Hug

Fri, June 16, 2023

Flowerfield is offering you the chance to show your creativity and be part of its fantastic free Woven Hug community textile project.

There are still spaces available to join and the team at Flowerfield want as many community groups and members of the public as possible to contribute to what promises to be an innovative and meaningful public textile sculpture.

An opportunity to reconnect, reunite, and reflect Woven Hug was first delivered in Monterrey, Mexico; employing arpillera, also known as burlap techniques, the participants will craft a textile ‘hug’ which will embrace the front of Flowerfield Arts Centre throughout the summer months.

This project has sustainability at its heart and by using recycled materials in response to the environmental damage caused by fast fashion, it provides all involved with an opportunity to re-purpose donated materials into something beautiful.

The project will run from 19th June to 5th July, led by artists Tere Chad and Cordelia Rizzo.   This project has been made possible through partnerships with Linen Biennale, Ulster University, Queen's University, and Conflict Textiles, with generous financial support from the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs.

Flowerfield warmly invites each of you to be a part of the Woven Hug and take part in free workshops, where you'll design and embroider pieces to be attached to the magnificent outdoor sculpture. You are invited to make this a true community effort and explore various important topics that will be intricately woven into the artwork.

During the workshops you’ll reflect on the post-Good Friday Agreement Northern Ireland society, delve into the rich textile heritage of our region, honour the historical role of women in society, marvel at our breath-taking landscapes and confront the impact of climate change upon them.
