Community Centres Conference taking place in Portrush

Fri, March 03, 2017

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has launched details of an exciting conference happening on Friday 24th March.

The event is specifically aimed at organisations across the Borough that operate community centres.

The theme of the Conference, which will take place in Magherabuoy House Hotel in Portrush, is ‘The importance of community centres, and the organisations who run them, in creating resilient, healthy and engaged communities’.

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Alderman Maura Hickey, launched details of the event, which will feature a range of national, regional and local speakers, at the Tilly Molloy Centre in Armoy.

The Tilly Molloy Centre is a great example of how diverse community provision can be. This particular community centre offers services such as nursery provision, Sure Start outreach, activity classes, summer schemes, a community pharmacy and social economy projects.

Speaking about the Conference, the Mayor said: “Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council recognises that there are a large number of community operated centres across the Borough, providing a range of vital social, leisure, and learning activities in our communities. We know that the organisations operating these centres face many challenges and we hope that, through this Conference, community leaders will be inspired to develop the potential of their centres as community hubs. The Conference will also provide a great opportunity to meet up and share experiences with other groups operating centres similar to their own.”

Participants at the Conference will hear about opportunities for community centres through the forthcoming Peace IV Shared Space Programme.

Spaces are limited and priority will be given to organisations that operate community centres on a voluntary basis and are open to the whole community.
