Visit to Limavady Orange Heritage Centre marks Good Relations Week

Mon, September 24, 2018

A visit to Limavady Orange Heritage Centre has taken place as part of a new Good Relations programme organised by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.

The visit, on Wednesday 18th September, coincided with Good Relations Week.

It included a tour of the many artefacts on display and a presentation by Dr Jonathan Mattison from the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland on the history of the Orange movement and why the Order still exists today.

This trip is part of a series of events organised by the Good Relations Team as part of their “Through the Looking Glass” programme. This provides an opportunity for residents to visit historical and cultural venues within the Borough and beyond to encourage understanding of the diversity of people and places around us.

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Brenda Chivers said: “This initiative aims to promote an appreciation of the diversity of people and cultures that make up our community, and my hope is that projects such as these will help to create a climate of mutual respect across the Causeway Coast and Glens area.

Good Relations Officer Amy McWilliams said: “This visit to the new Centre in Limavady was very informative and helped to provide insight into the Orange culture for participants from varying backgrounds. Our Through the Looking Glass project aims to provide our residents with opportunities to explore one another’s culture and we look forward to other similar events this year, exploring other forms of cultural expression. We would like to encourage people to take the opportunity to take part in future events as they arise”.

One participant commented: “It was very informative to hear history from another perspective. The speakers were open minded to hear other narratives.”

The Through the Looking Glass programme is free of charge but places are limited so if you would to be notified of future events please contact goodrelations@causewaycoastandglens.gov.uk or call Amy/Lorraine on 7776 0304 or Joy on 7034 7067.

If you want to attend an event but you don’t have access to transport, the Good Relations team will make every effort to ensure that you can participate.
