Schools encouraged to sign up for Council’s digital learning programme

Wed, June 19, 2019

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has launched its latest Digital Youth Programme.

The initiative, delivered in partnership with Young Enterprise NI, aims to harness and encourage entrepreneurial spirit within local school pupils. It’s designed to inform young people about future careers and opportunities within the digital sector, whilst also providing teachers with access to vital professional development video learning.

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Councillor Sean Bateson said: “As part of the Digital Youth programme, students in Causeway Coast and Glens will have the opportunity to not only learn about the growing digital sector, but develop their very own business concepts for the future. The programme was hugely successful last year and I hope this encourages even more local schools to sign up.”

Carol Fitzsimons MBE, Young Enterprise NI Chief Executive, said: “We are so pleased to see the launch of this important programme again this year. Young people are growing up surrounded by digital technology, and it’s vital we support them to understand how they apply these tools into the world of work to become the digital specialists that businesses need.”

“The programme is open to all post primary schools in the area and we would advise all those interested to sign up straight away. It is a popular programme and we are expecting demand to be high again. We would also ask Digital Ambassadors and successful business people in the local area to get in touch if they are interested in mentoring and sharing their own experiences with our young students.”

The programme will give young people the chance to participate in Digital Masterclass events including virtual reality, augmented reality, coding and robotics. The top student groups from each participating school will then have the chance to showcase their learning at a final event and compete to become ‘Digital Youth Company of the Year.’
