School children from across the Causeway Coast and Glens have enjoyed a lesson in local government.

Around 80 primary schools took part in the initiative at the invitation of the Mayor, Alderman Maura Hickey.

Pupils and staff enjoyed a reception in the Mayor’s Parlour, before taking their seats for a mock debate in the Council Chamber.

Speaking afterwards, the Mayor said: “I think it is very important for us an elected representatives to engage with young people wherever we can. Issues of democracy and citizenship overlap into the field of education, and we know that many of our primary schools have their own School Councils.

“I think we all enjoyed the debates which got quite spirited at times, and I’m sure a few of those I met are budding Councillors of the future!

“I would like to thank all pupils and staff who took part, and I hope they enjoyed their time as much as I did.”

During the visits, which took place over three days, pupils also enjoyed a question and answer session, and had the opportunity to view the Council robes and chains.
