Overwhelming response to Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Playful Museums Week project

Tue, March 09, 2021

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Museum Services team would like to thank all those who participated in its recent ‘Me to You’ Playful Museums Week activities.

Children were invited to take part in themed arts and crafts inspired by postcards held within our five museum collections as well as the great work of all our postal workers.

The response was overwhelming, with 78 packs distributed to 110 children aged from 1 to 9 years old. The virtual event featured a short animation which explored the journey of one little Bear’s postcard though time looking at delivery methods through the years including horse and mail carriage, pigeon post, train, mail plane and delivery van before the postcard’s final delivery to Granda Bear. It also included online instruction videos, along with postal and downloadable resource packs.

As part of the project, children had an opportunity to create their own portrait stamp and postcards which will feature in an upcoming new exhibition.

The team has already received lots of creative pieces so please look out for your thank-you certificates which are on their way in response.

The postcards created by the young participants will also be delivered to care homes within the Borough as a way of connecting generations and sharing creativity. Our next step will be to provide postcard templates to participating care homes to see if they would like to continue the journey by writing a response to the children.

It’s not too late to get involved.

If you would like to try any of the activities all templates can be downloaded from the Northern Ireland Community Archive website resources page.

Your postcard creations can be returned to Ballymoney Museum, 1 Townhead Street, Ballymoney, BT53 6BE.

Playful Museum’s Week was part funded by The Northern Ireland Museums Council.
