The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has taken on a new role as a volunteer befriender during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the guidance of Limavady Community Development Initiative (LCDI), Councillor Sean Bateson recently joined its ‘Good Morning’ service which provides regular telephone contact to those who are elderly or vulnerable in the wider Roe Valley area.

Speaking about his involvement, the Mayor said: “Our Good Morning schemes across the Council area play a very important role, and this has been heightened by the coronavirus pandemic

“From the outset of the health crisis, it has been clear that many people would need extra help and support, especially older people and those advised to shield at home.

“As Mayor, I wanted to help and I’m very grateful for the opportunity from LCDI to joins its initiative. From my home I have been making regular calls to some of the ‘Good Morning’ clients, having a friendly chat with them and very often a laugh as well.

“The service help to ensure that they have everything they need from groceries to medication, and it’s clear this service makes an invaluable positive impact on their day. I have struck up a good relationship with those I have spoken to and it has certainly been a very worthwhile experience for me.

“As Mayor, I was used to having a very busy diary, filled with engagements and appointments but this came to an abrupt end when the pandemic restrictions came into force so I’m glad that I have been able to redirect my role in this way.

“Once again, I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone who is playing a part in the community response to COVID-19 which is helping to ensure that those in need get all the practical and emotional support they need.”
