The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has welcomed the selection of Reverend John Kirkpatrick as the next Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.

Reverend Kirkpatrick has led Portrush Presbyterian Church since 1993 and prior to this he spent almost six years in Garryduff.

Offering his congratulations following the announcement, Councillor Richard Holmes said: “This is a great personal honour for Reverend Kirkpatrick, and the wider Borough as well.

“He has close connections to Causeway Coast and Glens through his long ministry, his birthplace in Limavady and his schooling at Coleraine Academical Institution, and he becomes the first ever Moderator from Portrush in the Church’s long history.

“I want to offer Reverend Kirkpatrick my warmest congratulations and every good wish as he prepares to take up his new position later in the year.”

A son and grandson ‘of the Manse’, Reverend Kirkpatrick is a third-generation Presbyterian minister. His father had been minister of Balteagh Presbyterian near Limavady, while his grandfather served in congregations in Counties Donegal, Tyrone and Antrim.

Known as the Moderator-Designate until the Church’s General Assembly in June, he will formally succeed the current Moderator, Right Reverend Dr David Bruce, as PCI’s principal public representative at this summer’s meeting.
