A new multi-million pound sports facility in Dungiven is now open to the public.

The facility, located on the Curragh Road, was funded by the former Department for Culture, Arts and Leisure and Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council.

The completion of the project was marked by a family fun day on Saturday. The event gave the local community an opportunity to view the state-of-the art building.

The complex features a range of indoor and outdoor facilities, including a gym, sports hall, dance studio, changing rooms, a kitchen and a floodlit 3g pitch.

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Alderman Maura Hickey said: “I’m sure this new building will become a focal point for the local community. Exercise and physical activity are so important to our overall well-being, and the completion of this project signifies Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s commitment to providing facilities which contribute to this.”

With enhanced facilities, Senior Recreation Attendant Leona Thompson is keen to expand the current activity programme, and there will be opportunities for more fitness classes, courses and indoor activity clubs.

Ollie Mullan, Sport and Community Facilities Manager for the area, said: “We are keen to maximise the potential of the new outdoor synthetic pitch, which is a great asset for the area. In line with the Sports Development Plan for the facility, I am looking forward to working with local clubs to address the need in the area.”
