Council’s CaféSmart award celebrates environmental efforts of local eateries

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has launched a new scheme which celebrates the environmental efforts of local eateries.
CaféSmart, described as a sustainable development initiative, recognises restaurants and cafés who are committed to waste reduction, energy saving and ethically sourcing goods.
The scheme was officially launched by the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council at Sea Shed coffee shop in Benone, which recently received its CaféSmart award.
Offering her support to the initiative, the Mayor Councillor Joan Baird OBE said: “Consumers are increasingly looking for businesses who show positive environmental and social practices and Council’s CaféSmart award is a way to formally recognise this. We have a fantastic range of eateries across the Borough and many are already taking steps to enhance the overall experience of their customers. I would encourage all those in the hospitality trade to avail of this free service and help to showcase the Causeway Coast and Glens as a leading environmentally friendly destination.”
All CaféSmart recognised establishments will be registered on a ‘story-map’ on Council’s website which will include information about sustainability activities and environmental efforts. This will be easily accessible to the general public and provides a unique platform for eateries to showcase how they are trying to improve their ecological and social performance. It ensures residents and visitors will be well informed about efforts across the Causeway Coast and Glens to protect natural resources for future generations.
To get involved, all you need to do is book a free CaféSmart survey which will be carried out by Council’s Environmental Resources Team who can also offer advice and guidance on best-practice. You can contact the team by emailing food.smart@causewaycoastandglens.gov.uk or ring 028 2766 0248.
