Coleraine has been named the ‘Best Town’ at this year’s Translink Ulster in Bloom competition – for the third successive year.

The annual horticultural celebration encourages towns and villages to look their best, boosting civic pride through beautiful plant and floral displays.

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Joan Baird OBE attended the announcement ceremony.

Speaking afterwards, she said: “It is very special for Coleraine to win this title for the third year in a row. This continued success reflects the very hard work of staff within our Parks department. Their efforts help to ensure that our towns and villages always look their very best. Coleraine’s fantastic floral displays are a great asset to the town, and I know they are much appreciated by the business community, shoppers and all of those who live there. I would like to pay tribute to everyone who has plaid a part in securing this prestigious title for Coleraine.”

Speaking at the results announcement ceremony, Translink Chairman, Frank Hewitt, said: “We’d like to thank all the local councils, businesses and community groups who invest their time, effort and expertise throughout the year to make their area a more attractive place to live and visit.”

Alderman Freda Donnelly, Vice President, Northern Ireland Local Government Association, said: The competition celebrates the successes that can be achieved when councils, ‘Bloom’ committees, residents and businesses, come together to take pride in the places where they live and work, creating a better environment for everyone to live in and share.

Now in its 39th year, all 11 local councils participated in the 2017 competition which attracted 160 entries.

The judging panel comprises professional horticulturists, lecturers, florists, members of Conservation Volunteers and Judges with N.I. Group of Flower Arranging Societies.
