Coleraine is blooming with pride after winning the Best Town title at this year’s Translink Ulster in Bloom competition.

This was the 38th year of the annual horticultural competition which celebrates Northern Ireland’s top gardening talent and beautiful floral displays.

The success was announced at an awards ceremony in Craigavon earlier this month which was attended by The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Alderman Maura Hickey.

Speaking about the event, The Mayor said: “It is a huge privilege to accept this award on behalf of Coleraine. I feel immensely proud and want to commend the commitment and efforts of both council staff and local communities for their continued hard work. It’s inspiring to see the floral displays, open spaces and beautiful landscape in Coleraine and the wider Borough. This award is truly deserved and I hope it will encourage more people to visit Coleraine and enjoy what we have to offer.”

Translink chairman Frank Hewitt said: “Ulster in Bloom connects people in local communities right across Northern Ireland and aims to make local villages, towns and cities more attractive places to live and visit, boosting civic pride. Translink and Ulster in Bloom are committed to supporting a more sustainable and prosperous society that respects the local environment.”

The Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition is organised by the Northern Ireland local Government Association (NILGA) which represents, promotes and sustains local government on behalf of all councils.

Alderman Freda Donnelly, Vice President of NILGA said: “We as an association are committed to adding true value to the local government sector, through initiatives like this competition. It helps us all take pride in the places where we live and work and create a better environment for everyone to enjoy.”

Coleraine will now be welcomed back to defend their title at the launch of the 2017 competition. This takes place during Bus and Train Week from 5th – 11th June.
