A centenarian from Aghadowey is the latest recipient of a special civic gift presented as part of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s NI 100 programme.

The Mayor, Alderman Mark Fielding, accompanied by the Mayoress Mrs Phyliss Fielding visited Edith Gilmore at St James’ Lodge in Ballymoney on Wednesday 12th May to deliver a commemorative coin in recognition of her 100th birthday which took place on April 16th.

The coin, featuring Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Coat of Arms on one side with ‘NI 100’ branding on the reverse, is being presented to all residents of the Borough who celebrate their 100th birthday in 2021, Northern Ireland’s centenary year.

The initiative is part of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s ‘NI 100’ programme to mark Northern Ireland’s 100th anniversary. A series of events and initiatives are planned for the year which collectively aim to showcase the very best of the Borough through the century and what makes it such a special place.

Alderman Fielding said: “It was a pleasure to make this presentation to Edith and give her my congratulations as she celebrates her milestone birthday.

“As we mark the centenary of Northern Ireland, these bespoke coins serve as a special keepsake and a celebration of the central role our oldest residents continue to play in our lives and the Borough.

“I would like to thank Edith, her family and the staff at St James’ Lodge for their warm welcome and for being a part of our NI 100 programme.”

The civic gift scheme is open to all people, organisations and businesses who celebrate their 100th birthday between January 1st 2021 and December 31st 2021.
