A 9-year-old girl from Castlerock recently took Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Environmental Resource Officers by surprise when she phoned to request help with a clean-up in her local area.

Sophie Henderson rang the Council office in Limavady where she explained how she wanted to arrange a litter pick along the Dunboe Road near her home.

After making the necessary arrangements with the Council team, Sophie engaged the help of her mother, little sister Chloe and family friend Linda McMullan and together the group did a great job clearing up waste and rubbish discarded by inconsiderate passers-by.

Praising her initiative, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Councillor Brenda Chivers said: “It’s not every day that a 9-year-old girl rings up to request assistance from the Council, and I know our Environmental Officers were very impressed by Sophie’s actions. I would like to take this opportunity to commend the way she has actively addressed the problem posed by litter which unfortunately affects so many beautiful parts of our borough. I would encourage other people to follow Sophie’s example and help to ensure that we keep the Causeway Coast and Glens looking its very best for everyone to enjoy.”

Schools, community groups and individuals are increasingly showing responsibility for their local area by participating in Council’s #LitterSmart initiative. Bags and litter pickers can be provided to anyone wishing to improve the presentation of areas where they live, work or visit. Collected rubbish will be lifted by Council workers and taken away for proper disposal.

Anyone wishing to participate in LitterSmart by arranging their own litter pick should email recycle@causewaycoastandglens.gov.uk or 028 2766 0248. For the latest news from Causeway Coast and Glens Borough follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
